Why do my magnetic tiles repel each other?

Tiles that repel are not a mystery and not a fault you can fix. They are a manufacturing decision, and the fix is knowing what to buy next time.

How a working tile behaves

Inside each edge of a good tile is a small cylindrical neodymium magnet sitting loose in a cavity. It is free to spin. When you bring another tile close, the magnet rotates so that opposite poles face each other, and the tiles attract. Turn the tile around and it rotates again. There is no wrong way to present an edge.

That freedom to rotate is the entire mechanism. If it is working, a set never repels, in any orientation, ever.

Why cheaper sets push apart

Letting the magnet spin requires a cavity moulded to a tolerance, and it adds a step to assembly. Glueing or press-fitting the magnet in a fixed orientation is faster and cheaper. It also means each edge has a permanent north or south face, so roughly half of all attempts to join two tiles push apart instead.

Children read this as the toy being broken, and they are not entirely wrong. It is the single most common complaint about budget magnetic tiles and it is not something that develops over time — a set that repels did so on day one.

The things people try that do not work

  • Flipping the tile. Works for that one join, then fails on the next edge.
  • Warming or freezing them. Neodymium magnets do lose strength at high temperatures, permanently. Do not do this.
  • Opening the frame to reseat the magnet. This releases a small strong magnet from a toy. Do not do this either.
  • Buying more of the same set. The new pieces will behave identically.

What to check before you buy again

The listing rarely says "rotating magnets" in those words. What it does say, if you sort reviews by most recent, is whatever buyers found — and the words to search for are "repel" and "push apart". One or two mentions is noise. A pattern is the answer.

Mixing brands
