Magnetic tiles FAQ

Flat geometric building pieces — squares, triangles, pentagons and more — with magnets sealed inside the frame. The magnets rotate freely, so any edge attracts any other edge and pieces never repel.

Magformers is a brand of open-frame magnetic construction tiles. The same family includes STICK-O, a toddler line of chunky rods and balls, and TILEBLOX, a solid-panel tile line.

Magformers tiles are open frames you can see through. TILEBLOX tiles have a filled, often translucent panel. They share standard sizing so they build together.

No. Everything is mechanical and magnetic. Track sets are gravity driven unless a listing specifically says otherwise.

A plain rainbow set of around thirty pieces for a three- to five-year-old. STICK-O for under-threes. A Deluxe or Educational assortment for a confident builder of five and up.

Thirty for one child, fifty to sixty for two, a hundred or more for a classroom. Shape mix matters as much as the total — most sets are short of triangles.

Plain first, unless the child has a strong existing obsession the theme matches. Themed boxes make excellent second purchases.

Wheels. A wheel base costs little and lets every existing build drive, which roughly doubles what the collection can do.

Usually on cost per piece, and definitely on shape variety — large sets include the pentagons and hexagons that small ones omit.

Almost always a narrow base or an untriangulated square structure. Widen the base and add a diagonal — squares deform, triangles do not.

Yes, and it is worth showing them deliberately. Vertical building is a different structural problem and often restarts interest in a quiet set.

Give one specific challenge rather than tipping out the box, add a constraint such as using only triangles, or move play to a new surface.

Frequently and enthusiastically, in our experience. They are also genuinely useful for demonstrating geometry to older students.

Damp cloth, mild soap, dry immediately. Never soak them, never put them in a dishwasher, and keep alcohol away from clear panels.

Throw it away immediately. A cracked frame is how a small strong magnet reaches a child.

Sealed inside the plastic, no. Loose, yes — swallowed magnets are a medical emergency. See our safety centre for the full picture.

Wipe, do not submerge. Water inside the frame corrodes the magnet and permanently weakens the joint.

Not meaningfully. A tile that has stopped holding is almost always cracked or waterlogged rather than demagnetised.

On hours of use per pound they perform well, mainly because there is no single correct outcome and therefore no point at which the toy is finished. Storage is the biggest variable — a set kept out of sight gets a fraction of the use.

Consistent magnet strength, welded seals, tighter tolerances and a shape range beyond squares and triangles. Those are also the first things a cheap copy drops.

Usually they attract, because standard sizing has converged. Mixed structures are less stable, so keep ambitious builds within one system.

With a careful piece-by-piece inspection first. You are looking for hairline cracks and rattles.
