Cleaning and caring for magnetic tiles

The short version

What ruins magnetic tiles permanently

• Soaking or submerging. Water enters through the welded seam, sits inside the frame and corrodes the magnet. The tile looks fine and gets progressively weaker.
• Dishwashers. Heat plus water plus detergent. Warping and clouding are common and irreversible.
• Solvent or alcohol wipes on clear panels. Clear plastic crazes into a permanent milky finish. Coloured frames survive; the windows do not.
• Abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. Fine scratches, dull surface, no way back.
• Direct sunlight for months. Colours fade and plastic becomes brittle. A sunny windowsill is a display shelf, not storage.

Routine cleaning

1. Wring a cloth out in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid — damp, not wet.
2. Wipe each face and along the frame edges where hands grip.
3. Dry immediately with a clean towel; do not leave them to air dry in a pile.
4. Spread them out for ten minutes before boxing them, so no moisture is trapped.

Disinfecting for a classroom or after illness

Use a wipe or spray rated for hard surfaces and toys, apply it to a cloth rather than directly to the tile, observe the contact time on the label, then wipe with a plain damp cloth and dry. Avoid alcohol on transparent panels. In group settings, cleaning between cohorts matters more than cleaning intensity — follow whatever policy your setting already has for hard-surface toys.

Sticky, scuffed and written-on

• Sticky residue: soapy cloth first; if that fails, a fingernail and patience.
• Permanent marker: a tiny amount of alcohol on a cloth works, but only on opaque coloured frames — never on clear panels.
• Sand and grit in the frame: a dry toothbrush along the edges. Do not rinse.
• Sticker residue: warm soapy cloth, held in place for a minute to soften it.

The weekly inspection

This is the part that actually matters, and it takes thirty seconds.

• Shake a handful near your ear. A rattle means a magnet has come loose inside a frame.
• Flex a few pieces gently. A cracked frame will flex or click.
• Look along the welded seam for a gap or a lifted edge.
• Check that no piece has a chip exposing the magnet cavity.

Any suspect piece goes in the bin. Not repaired, not taped, not kept for spares. A single loose magnet is worth far less than the risk it carries — see the safety centre for why.

Storage that protects them

Shallow open containers, out of direct sun, ideally not in an unheated garage where temperature swings stress the plastic. Keep sets that will be combined in the same container so pieces do not migrate under furniture. The storage guide covers the systems that work with real children.
